Ancona harbour has been described by the European Community as a port with "international role". It is one of the busiest ports in "Adriatic motorways of the sea".
Ø A gateway for import / export with countries of east Mediterranean.
Ancona is leader in Adriatic for short sea shipping with ro-ro and ferry traffic in regards to:
- Greece (Igoumenitsa, Patras)
- Croatia (Split)
- Albania (Durazzo)
- Montenegro (Bar)
- Turkey (Cesme)
- Lebanon (Beirut)
1.500.000 passengers pass through the port of Ancona every year, mainly from/to Greece (more than 1 million passengers and 186.000 commercial vehicles).
Ø Ancona is an international port for general cargo. It handles around 10 million tons of goods every year, out of which petrol is 5 million tons.
Imported goods are mainly coal, steel, iron, kaolin and cereals.
Tir traffic regards 200.000 units and 2,3 million tons; container traffic regards 75.000 teus with 545.000 tons.
Ø Ancona is an important fishing port (the second in Italy) serving local food industries.
Ø It is a port of call for cruise ships.
Ø In Ancona shipyards every kind of vessel is designed and built. As well as Fincantieri, the main shipbuilder in Italy, medium and small shipbuilders construct yachts, car ferries, fishing boats, etc.
